An Awakening Experience

| By Dr. Paola Bianco Sobejano, sponsor It was two years ago when my husband and I decided to sponsor a little girl. While doing research on different programs, we came across Children International. We were happy to see the organization’s priorities on education and health. Also, we appreciated the ease with which they make it possible to visit your sponsored child. Like many sponsors, we live in a First World country and tend to take for granted all the basic necessities we have. In our busy lives, there is simply nothing more rewarding than sponsoring a child in need. Children International’s emphasis on two major areas of life – health and education – is crucial. These are basic needs that all children should be able to receive. Thanks to Children International and their sponsors, poor children can live a life like other children. They can attend school, learn how to read and write, and receive medical attention when needed. Also, at Christmastime and other holidays – including their birthdays – Children International makes sure that they can celebrate these holidays by receiving a gift. When the time came, the personnel of Children International were able to accommodate our request to visit our sponsored girl, Karen, in Mexico and arranged for us to spend an entire day with her. Perhaps the most emotional moment of the visit was when we were leaving. Karen’s mother insisted on giving a doll to my daughter. It was in this simple kindness that we saw how people who have almost nothing can be the most generous. This was the highlight of our trip…an awakening experience. My husband and I returned satisfied and content to see all the good deeds that can be accomplished through a little generosity and compassion for children in need.
