And Then There Were 2. Why Do We Wait Till There's Only 2?

animalsturtlegirl.jpgWhy are humans so reactive instead of proactive? We may say that we care about the consequences of our actions but only if caring is convenient. Even if there is genuine concern, it may involve one or two steps in the future. It rarely goes to what I like to call "X=1" or "checkmate." If we thought many steps into the future, we would have to acknowledge that what we are doing or plan to do is or will be detrimental to the environment or a species. Now that certain species are on the brink of extinction, everyone's up in arms.

For example, in China, an old giant turtle was left in a zoo barely noticed and definitely unappreciated until the scientists that study such things realized that she may be the last female of her kind (a giant Yangtze soft-shell turtle)! It turns out that there is one remaining male turtle also.

Sounds like a sci-fi movie right? I've always said if you want to see a glimpse into the future, watch the Sci-Fi channel and it ain't pretty! The future is often depicted as dark, polluted and damaged either physically or psychologically. I don't know many times have you seen the Statue of Liberty lying on her side, half buried.

Well in this real-life episode started fifty one years ago. Turtle Girl, who is 80 years old now was left at the Changsha, China Zoo by a traveling circus. There she was pretty much ignored, which may have been a good thing since she was able to go about her life cycle as nature intended. Her soon to be husband/sperm donor is around 100 years old, at another Chinese zoo.

Extinction is an immediate possibility for this species, all because no one stop to think a few decades ago of the impact that pollution, hunting and careless land development would have.

Well, I hope Turtle Boy still has some mojo magic left under that shell.

What a sad state we are in. How can the human race be so intelligent and yet so stupid at the same time? Let's all send positive thoughts to Turtle Boy and his mojo.

Just because we can doesn't mean we should. Humans are always trying to do more, get more with little regard for the consequences. One day after there was a shark attack reported on the news, I heard someone say one day,"We should just get rid of all the sharks, why do we need them?" And this was a very educated person!
