Hunger is a reality for children in America

By the end of the year, more than 12 million children in America will worry about having the food they need.

childrenshareourstrength.gifShare Our Strength® is a national organization working to make sure that no kid grows up hungry in America. By raising funds through programs like Share Our Strength's The Great American Dine Out®, presented by American Express®, Share Our Strength weaves together a net of community groups, activists and food programs to catch children at risk of hunger and surround them with nutritious food where they live, work and play.

Share Our Strength's Great American Dine Out helps raise critical funds for organizations in communities across America that are working with Share Our Strength to end childhood hunger.

Having limited access to nutritious food has enduring lifelong consequences on children:

  • Weaker immune systems
  • Impeded growth and development
  • More stomach- and headaches, colds and ear infections
  • Increased susceptibility to obesity
  • Impaired performance at school—academically, athletically and socially

CHEFS Catalog has joined Share Our Strength (SOS) in the fight against childhood hunger. To date, SOS has raised over $200 million to fight hunger in America and around the globe and has invested critical funds in over 1,000 hunger-related organizations.

Poverty is complex; feeding a child is not.

It's time to roll up our sleeves and put an end to childhood hunger.

Help make "No Kid Hungry" a reality.

Feel Like Humpty Dumpty Lumpty - Bump Go Bye Bye.

LuciagirlaftersurgeryHi everyone.

I had my surgery and even though I had a lot of pain and swelling, I'm feeling better everyday.

Everyone taking care of me at the hospital was so nice.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH to all my nurses and doctors who made me feel safe, who gave me medicine to help my head and to the surgeons who operated ALL DAY on me to take the bump out.

THANK YOU to everyone who came to see me and sent me mail and presents.
I just love getting mail.

Even the hospital food was pretty good!
Now I know I'm sick in the head.

Anyway, the doctors say I'm improving so fast that they may let me go home since my grandma is a nurse and grandpa is a doctor.

I can't wait to see Tallulah May Puppy, I miss her.

Please Pray for my LuciaGirl

luciagirlpingpong.JPG"I Have a Bump on My Brain."

Now I know why I've been feeling so tired and having so many headaches.

I have a bump on my brain but my doctors are going to take it out for me.

In the meantime, I get to visit with PingPong.  He's a therapy dog at the hospital.

We both love getting our picture taken.

--------------------------

We have some of the best doctors in the country working on her and I have complete confidence in their abilities.

I ask that everyone pray for a miracle in regards to the pathology report.  We won't know the results till at least a week after the surgery.

Could You and Your Family Recover From Such a Tragedy?

PLEASE HELP!  GIVE WHAT YOU CAN.

Children affected by Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar.

Dear StyleSwag Magazine,

As the death toll in Myanmar continues to rise as a result of Cyclone Nargis and as hardships for thousands of survivors left in its wake increase, Save the Children continues to mount a rapid response to provide lifesaving relief to children and families.

Although there are issues getting additional aid into Myanmar, we have been able to provide food, clean water, shelter and non-food items to 72,000 people whose homes have been destroyed. This is thanks to the brave efforts of our staff and generous donations from our supporters so far.

But even this isn't enough to cope with a disaster of this scale.

As the situation unfolds, we must do more. Will you please help?

Save the Children has operated in Myanmar since 1995 as one of the largest nongovernmental organizations at work in Myanmar, implementing programs focused on early childhood care and development, child survival and child protection. As a result, we have been able to quickly mobilize our 500 employees in 35 offices across the affected region to help the most vulnerable – children.

As their immediate physical needs are met, we will work to restore their well-being and sense of normalcy, in addition to ensuring that their protection, education and survival needs are addressed. So far, several child-friendly spaces for children have been set up in temporary shelters in Yangon.

Since Monday, Save the Children has distributed two metric tons of food, plastic sheeting, water purification tablets, kitchen equipment, rehydration salts and other non-food items to those whose homes have been destroyed. In addition, a center in Yangon for HIV-positive girls and young women is being supplied with clean water, food and essential medicines.

Shelter materials, clean water, mosquito nets and emergency health kits are critical needs at this time — and we are moving quickly to provide these lifesaving items. The rainy season will commence soon and is likely to complicate an already desperate situation. We need to move aid quickly to alleviate current hardships and mitigate the potential for a greater crisis later on.

Please give as generously as you can to aid in our efforts to help the children and families whose lives have been forever changed by Cyclone Nargis.

Learn more about the situation and our response.

On behalf of the children,

A CHILDRENS' CHARITY CHOSEN FOR THE 2008 CHUMP CHANGE CHALLENGE - Save the Children - "Providing a Hand-Up Not a Hand-Out."

Please help us raise funds for
Save the Children.
Remember, you can also
mail in your spare change.

THE 2008 CHUMP CHANGE CHALLENGE:
Save the Children

Last summer, Not on Our Watch, a new organization headed by George Clooney, Matt Damon, Brad Pitt, Don Cheadle, Jerry Weintraub and David Pressman, announced a $1 million donation to Save the Children to assist more than 70,000 displaced women and children living in temporary camps in West Darfur, Sudan and in eastern Chad.

Approximately 2.5 million, a third of Darfur's population, have been driven from their homes. Displaced children and families have insufficient access to food, shelter, clean water and clothing.

Save the Children’s programs in Sudan address hunger relief, emergency health care, water and sanitation programs, protection, and shelter. Our programs assist displaced persons, returnees, and war-affected and other vulnerable groups – mainly children and women – through basic services that result in food security, self-sufficiency and independency from AIDS.

Your donation will help us support and protect children and families who are suffering from this humanitarian crisis.

Child Poverty in America

One in six children lives in poverty in America. They don't need to. Save the Children works in impoverished rural communities in Appalachia, the Southeast, the Mississippi River Delta, the Gulf Coast, the Southwest and California’s Central Valley – where conditions resemble parts of the developing world.

Save the Children’s U.S. activities serve these children by focusing on early childhood development; literacy, physical activity and nutrition programs; and emergency response.

Your support can help us reach children in need in remote rural regions across the country.

Are these good enough reasons to click that darn quarter?

Estimates indicate that $60 million was raised!

Idol Gives Back Brings Awareness and Support to Save the Children's U.S. Programs

a school in New Orleans
in support of Idol Gives Back
Save the Children was proud to be a part of this year's Idol Gives Back event on April 9th, when the needs of children in the U.S. and around the world were highlighted and people were asked to open up their hearts and wallets to help.

Estimates indicate that $60 million was raised, and Save the Children’s portion will benefit U.S. Programs.

Prominent celebrities including American Idol judges Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul, Super Bowl winning quarterbacks (and brothers) Peyton and Eli Manning and teen sensation Miley Cyrus all visited Save the Children programs in different parts of the United States and urged viewers to support the agency's work.

Thanks to all of you who supported this historic philanthropic event!

Is That Change in Your Pocket or are You Just Happy to See Me?

THE 2008 CHUMP CHANGE CHALLENGE

What can you buy with a quarter?
Not much but together our small change can make big change!

We all have piles of loose change in a jar, dish or drawer. Maybe it's the classic - change under the sofa cushions.

Well brothers & sisters, I ask you, "What good is it doing under your sofa?"  Your small change can make a big change in someone's life. It can house the homeless, feed the hungry, rescue animals.

Our goal is to collect 44,000 quarters by year end, so please send in a few quarters.
Join the Chump Change Challenge today!

How much do should you donate?

Note the name of this campaign. We're just looking to collect some dusty change. Whatever you can give is perfect - a nickel, a dime a couple of quarters.

Where's the money going, you ask?

How come that spare change didn't mean much when it was sitting in a jar, but now that I ask you for some, you're getting all possessive?

98% of all monies collected will be donated to the area which you choose within the 4 categories:

Animals:  World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA)

Why did we choose to support WSPA?
By supporting WSPA, you are given a unique chance to help animals around the world.  Many of our members see the importance of helping animals in other countries & want to support animals outside of their own community, since the US and Europe are making efforts to protect animals but animals in developing countries are in great need; many countries don't have any legal protection for animals. The WSPA programs allow them to do this is a very effective manner.  We are finding increasingly that US supporters see the importance of helping animals in other countries. WSPA is the only animal welfare group to hold consultative status with the United Nations and the Council of Europe.  READ MORE and DONATE (please?)

Children:  Save the Children

Why did we choose them?
Save the Children is the leading independent organization creating real and lasting change for children in need in the United States and around the world. It is a member of the International Save the Children Alliance, comprising 28 national Save the Children organizations working in more than 110 countries to ensure the well-being of children.  READ MORE and DONATE, (por favor?)

Environment:   The National Resources Defense Council (NRDC)

Why NRDC?
"NRDC is, by many accounts, the most effective lobbying and litigating group on environmental issues." — The Wall Street Journal.  They use law, science and the support of 1.2 million members and online activists to protect the planet's wildlife and wild places and to ensure a safe and healthy environment for all living things.
We chose NRDC because their mission is quite clear - To safeguard the Earth: its people, its plants and animals and the natural systems on which all life depends
READ MORE and DONATE, (s'il vous plait?)

Health:TBA

TBA

Where's the remaining 2% going?

Well, we're hoping to upgrade from gov't cheese to Krafts.

How will donations be collected?

1. Securely and easily through PayPal.
2. Or for those who enjoy making my life just a little bit more difficult, you can tape your change to an index card, state your charity preference and mail to:
StyleStationNYC PO Box 286865 New York, NY 10128

We will update this page as charities for each category is selected.

I'll probably adopt because I think it'll be in the next three to five years. I wouldn't necessarily adopt from abroad like some celebs. I just want a healthy baby."

Want to Send a Note on Something Other Than a Notecard?

mansendaballguy.jpg mansendaball.jpgSENDaBALL® is a family run business based in Chicago. They started sending balls in 1996 to family and friends and have been rolling ever since. You can get standard messages like Hope you Bounce Back and Have a Ball On Your Birthday or you can add a custom message created just for your situation.

The founders describe how it start: "One of the first balls I sent was "have a ball with your new baby", the response was so overwhelming I did it again and again. A few years later while standing in line at the post office with balls, I was approached by an elderly man that asked about the balls and asked if I could send a ball to a friend who was ill, I said ok and it made him smile." Since starting Send-a-Ball, he's gotten emails from all over the world about how getting a ball in the mail has brought a smile into someone’s life.

Okay, Who's Next on the Baby Train?

artmusiccelebbabies.JPG

The Stork Workers Union better have some good workman's comp insurance because whoever's working the Hollywood district is going to have some serious wing-tunnel syndrome from all the deliveries going on in that town!

Shiloh (Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt), Kingston (Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale), Suri (Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise), Harlow (Nicole Ritchie and Joel Madden), Max (Christina Aguilera and Jordan Bratman), JLo just had her twins.

Who's next? Let me see. I think it might be Halle Berry then Jessica Alba but there's plenty more scheduled for 2008.  Gwen Stefani is expecting her second and Nicole Kidman is also expecting her first.  I have to say I didn't think that would ever happen.  Matthew McConaughey and that, that, that...Brazilian - (why I oughta...messin' with my man Matthew like that.)

It's not verbally confirmed yet but it sure was visually evident at the Independent Spirit Awards that Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are expecting again and this time it's twins.  I think I would be the one of the first people to know, since we're such close friends (no we're not).
