First Dolphins, Now Whales.

planetearthwhaletail.JPGJapan has launched its' largest whaling expedition, targeting protected humpbacks for the first time since the 1960s. They say it's for research but at a a farewell ceremony the expedition, officials were quoted that Japan should preserve its whale-eating culture.

To quote Michelle Frey, a Greenpeace member, "Yeah, right! What kind of research is Japan conducting that justifies the need to kill 1,000 minke whales, 50 threatened humpback whales and 50 endangered fin whales this year? I haven’t seen any new “scientific” journals posted about whale discoveries coming out of Japan. But, I have seen pictures of whale meat in Japanese markets and even in school cafeterias. Right, it’s research! Everyone believes that." Meanwhile, an opinion poll carried out in Japan by the Nippon Research Centre, in June 2006, showed that 95 per cent of Japanese people never or rarely eat whale meat. More than two-thirds of Japanese do not support whaling on the high seas.

Maybe this is Japan's "Kiss My Ass" response to the International Whaling Commissions' call for an end to the killing of whales in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary under Japan's whaling program.

Hi! Just found this about the latest protests.

"They're violent environmental terrorists," Hajime Ishikawa, the head of the mission, was reported to have said to the a crowd at a farewell ceremony for the next whaling expedition. "Their violence is unforgivable. We must fight against their hypocrisy and lies."

I know who the terrorists are, and there not the protestors. Regards Peter

Yep . I haven't heard of any violent protests. It sounds like Mr. Ishikawa was the one getting hostile. In the same breath he said,"Japan must preserve it's whale eating culture." Meanwhile, most Japanese don't eat whale anymore nor do they agree with the killing of whales. So who is he really trying to please?
